NBA: Warriors hire ex-star Moncrief as shooting coach

Advertiser Staff

LA'IE — Five-time NBA All-Star Sidney Moncrief was hired as a shooting coach today by the Golden State Warriors.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Moncrief was with the Warriors as they opened training camp.

Moncrief averaged 15.6 points, shooting 50.2 percent from the field and 83.1 percent from the free throw line, in 767 regular-season games during an 11-year NBA career. Ten seasons were spent with the Bucks.

He played his first eight seasons under Warriors coach Don Nelson. During those years, Moncrief was an All-Star from 1981-86, and was voted NBA defensive player of the year in 1983 and '84.

"I think he's loaded with talent and skill," Nelson said.

Moncrief, 50, served as head coach of the NBA Development League's Fort Worth Flyers this past season, leading the team to a 29-21 record. He was also an assistant coach for Nelson with Dallas from 2000-03.

Moncrief began his coaching career with the University of Arkansas-Little Rock in 1999.
