DUI arrests up 6 percent on Big Island

Police on the Big Island arrested 32 motorists for drunken driving last week, raising this year's DUI arrests total on the island to 998 compared to 940 over the same time frame last year. The 6 percent increase is in part because of DUI roadblocks and patrols.Of the 32 arrests last week, seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Two were under the age of 21.
There have been 1,574 major accidents on the Big Island so far this year compared with 1,897 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17 percent.
