The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents have voted to accept a gift of more than $3.4 million to Honolulu Community College by the Norman W. H. Loui Estate. The Board also approved the name change of HCC's Kapalama Media Conference Center to The Norman W. H. Loui Conference Center in honor of the donation.
The gift from the Loui Estate will establish three endowed funds through the UH Foundation: The Norman W. H. Loui Tools of the Trade Scholars Program, to provide tool and book scholarships to students with financial need in the Technical and Trades Program; The Norman W. H. Loui Community Boating and Marine Technology Program, to provide education and training activities for the community, developed and presented by the Marine Education and Training Center at Sand Island and the HCC Diesel Program; and, The Norman W. H. Loui Student Innovation Fund for Carpentry, to allow HCC to support students interested in developing new processes, fabrications, products or technologies in the field of carpentry.
The newly renamed Norman W. H. Loui Conference Center at HCC serves as a gathering place for the campus and community at-large, hosting conferences of up to 200 participants with means for both satellite and Internet telecommunications. It also hosts the Kalihi-Palama community meetings and events for various non-profit and professional societies, in addition to housing the HCC Dinosaur Exhibit, a popular attraction visited by local preschool and younger elementary school classes annually.
