Stolen van used in Kapahulu bank robbery recovered

Advertiser Staff

A stolen delivery van used as a getaway vehicle in a Kapahulu bank robbery this morning was recovered near Kaimuki High School.

Mike Lee, president of Fresh Island Fish Co., said about $1,500 worth of seafood in the cargo hold was saved because the thieves abandoned the vehicle with its engine on. The van was located about 10 minutes after the robbery of Bank of Hawaii at 727 Kapahulu Ave. occurred shortly before 11 a.m.

Police processed the van for evidence before releasing it to the company.

The van was stolen from a side access parking area at 449 Kapahulu Ave. while a delivery was being made to Sam Choy's Diamond Head Restaurant, said Lee. "Whoever drove it away had to have robbed the bank and used it as a getaway car," Lee said.

Two men fled in the white van from the robbery scene, police said.

The suspect who entered the bank at 10:51 a.m., approached a teller, brandished a knife with a four-inch blade and demanded money. He fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
