Advertiser Staff

Olympia Dukakis, the actress best known for her Oscar-winning role as the matriarch in 1987's "Moonstruck," will speak on her life in film and theater as well as conduct a master class at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa next month.

Her talk, "State of the Arts," will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 16 at the UHM Architecture Auditorium. Admission is $15 general, $5 for UH undergraduates.

Her two-day, non-credit master class, part of the Pacific New Media program, is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 17-18 at UHM Krauss Hall 012. The fee is $250 to participate, $125 to observe (space is limited). In the workshop, Dukakis will critique scenes or monologues performed by workshop participants.

Dukakis is an accomplished teacher, actor and director in theater, stage and television. She is winner of the Golden Globe, Obie Award, Drama Desk Award and Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award.

She most recently appeared in this year's "Away From Her," along with Julie Christie, giving a powerful performance as a wife of a man suffering from Alzheimer's.

Dukakis also happens to be the first cousin of Michael Dukakis, unsuccessful presidential candidate in 1988.
