According to the Lubbock (Texas) Avalanche-Journal's Web site, Cannon died of gunshot wounds to the chest.

Cannon was a graduate of Coronado High School in Lubbock and is the son of Tom and Becky Cannon, according to the Avalanche-Journal. The newspaper's Web site reported the corpsman's father is a former Lubbock County court-at-law judge and his mother was executive director of the Lubbock Rape Crisis Center for 30 years.
