Advertiser Staff

Three people escaped uninjured from a burning two-story wooden house today at 54-285 Hau'ula Homestead Road.

Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said 35 firefighters from eight companies — five engine, two ladder and one tanker — responded to the 2:14 p.m. alarm. The fire was reported under control at 2:30 p.m. and extinguished at 3:55 p.m., according to Seelig.

"There's significant damage ... it doesn't appear to be liveable right now," Seelig said of the 35-year-old home.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.

Two men, both 19, and a woman, 18, were asleep in different areas of the house when the fire started, said Seelig. "There's no (smoke) alarm but they smelled the smoke and got out," Seelig said.

Two escaped through a bedroom window and another from the back door, said Seelig One of the men who escaped lives at the address while the other two people are visitors, Seelig added.

The woman and one of the men who escaped declined treatment at the scene, said city Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic.

Three other adult residents, who live in the house, were not at home. The Hawai'i Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to offer assistance to the displaced residents.
