Morinaga earns Big Sky honors after winning tourney

Advertiser Staff

Portland State junior Kayla Morinaga was named Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Week after winning yesterday's University of Colorado Heather Farr Memorial Invitational.

Morinaga, a Sacred Hearts graduate from Waipahu, became just the third Viking to earn medalist honors in the 11-year history of the program. Morinaga shot rounds of 74, 69, 71 for a two-under-par 214. Morinaga was two shots off the lead entering yesterday's final round.

Morinaga recorded 10 birdies in the 54-hole tournament at the Omni Interlocken Golf Club in Broomfield, Colo. Her second-round 69 matched her career-best at Portland State. The 54-hole score of 214 was a personal best, and just one shot off the school record.

Morinaga helped Portland State to a 14th-place finish in the 20-team tournament. Hawai'i finished eighth in the tournament.
