Ex-boyfriend charged in Maui break-in

The Maui News

LAHAINA — Bail was set at $50,000 for a Lahaina man arrested Saturday for allegedly breaking into his former girlfriend's residence and driving off with her car, police said.

Efren Quillayen Jr., 27, was charged with first-degree burglary and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

He was arrested about 10:30 p.m., a few hours after the woman reported that her residence on Lower Honoapiilani Road had been burglarized and her car parked outside was stolen, said acting Lt. Ernest Soares of the Lahaina Criminal Investigation Division.

He said the woman had left the residence for about 10 minutes before returning home and discovering someone had broken in, taking property as well as the keys to her vehicle. Quillayen was suspected after he told someone he had been at the home to look for the woman, Soares said.

When patrol officers located Quillayen at a friend's house, he had the keys to his ex-girlfriend's car in his pocket, Soares said. The car was found parked on Lower Honoapiilani Road, with items taken from the woman's residence inside, Soares said.
