MIYAJIMA 2ND AT LPGA QUALIFIER

Shayna Miyajima of Wailuku is in second place after yesterday's opening round of the LPGA Sectional Qualifying at Plantation Golf Club, in Venice, Fla. Miyajima shot a 4-under-par 68 and trails leader Na-Yeon Choi by a shot.

"I think a lot of it was luck," said Miyajima, who had five birdies and a bogey. "A lot was skill, too, but when you shoot an unbelievable round it has to be a little bit of luck. I don't want to be too confident. I want to shoot the best I can tomorrow."

Miyajima graduated from San Diego State, where she captained the golf team in 2003 and 2004. She has played 27 events on the Duramed Futures Tour in the past two years, making five cuts.

Hilo's Leah Whiting opened with a 79 and Kailua's Bridget Keala Dwyer shot 80.

The LPGA's second sectional runs through Friday. The field of 149 features 24 amateurs, 56 international players and golfers from 34 states.

The field will be cut to the low 70 and ties tomorrow. The top 30 (and ties) after Friday's final round advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, Nov. 28 to Dec. 2 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
