Hawaii livestock production was mixed in August

Hawai'i livestock industry production was mixed in August, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Milk production plunged 48 percent from August 2006 to 2.5 million pounds following the shutdown of one of O'ahu's two remaining dairies this summer. Cumulative milk production for the first eight months of 2007 totaled 26.8 million pounds, which was down 33 percent from the same period in 2006.

Egg production fell 17 percent from August 2006 to 6.8 million. Cumulative egg production through August fell 18 percent to 54.9 million eggs.

Total cattle marketed for August rose 12 percent from August 2006 to 3,800 head.

Cumulative cattle marketings for the first eight months of 2007 totaled 35,500 head, down 2 percent from the same period a year ago.

Pork production during August 2007 fell 11 percent from August 2006 to 298,000 pounds. Cumulative pork production for the first eight months of 2007 totaled 2.3 million pounds, which down 10 percent from a year ago.
