John Kelly Jr., surf pioneer and activist, died yesterday afternoon, his family said.

He was 88.

In the mid-1960s Kelly founded the grassroots ocean-based environmental group Save Our Surf, a movement that was instrumental in preventing offshore development around the Islands and saving 140 surfing sites between Pearl Harbor and Koko Head.

The Navy veteran also spoke out about nuclear weapons and was a tireless advocate for the Hawaiian sovereignty movement.

The Black Point resident had long suffered from Alzheimer's.
