Hawaiian Telcom warns of Maui outage during repair

Advertiser Staff

An estimated 1,200 Hawaiian Telcom customers in Huelo, parts of Haiku and Ulumalu on Maui will not have phone and high-speed Internet services for about four hours beginning at midnight tonight as Hawaiian Telcom crews repair a kink in a fiber optic cable. Residents also will not be able to call 911 from their landlines during these hours.

The urgent repair is necessary to prevent a larger outage, the company said. Hawaiian Telcom engineers believe the cable could sever at any time and cause more downtime for customers.

No businesses or government agencies are expected to be negatively impacted by this planned outage. Wireless service in this remote area is spotty and therefore customers may not have access to wireless service. Hawaiian Telcom said will have contingency plans in place if problems arise during the repair activity.
