Hawaii medical team to help in Myanmar

HONOLULU The Aloha Medical Mission plans to send 15 doctors, nurses and support staff to Myanmar this month despite political unrest and a violent government crackdown on demonstrations in the country.The Hawaii group of volunteers will leave for the Southeast Asian nation in mid-October.
Last year, the Aloha Medical Mission treated more than 200 indigent patients in Myanmar.
The volunteers performed 60 major surgeries, treated hundreds in outpatient clinics and trained Myanmar medical personnel.
They'll be returning to the same Sittagu Ayudhana Monastery Hospital in Sagaing this year.
The town is an ancient center of Buddhist learning across the Ayerawaddy River from Mandalay.
