Kihei recycling center closed for construction

The Kihei Recycling and Redemption Center on Maui has been closed temporarily due to the construction of the new Kihei recycling center, the county's Department of Environmental Management announced yesterday.

The new site is approximately 1.5 acres and is adjacent to the temporary facility off Piilani Highway at Welakahao Road.

It will be completely fenced, feature landscaping and solar lights.

Construction of the new facility is scheduled to take approximately four months.

Residents can continue recycling at any of the following locations:

(these sites do not accept newspaper, cardboard or non-HI-5 glass or plastic):

Maui Disposal Mobile Center

Located at the South Baptist Church on the corner of South Kihei Road and Welakahao. Hours: Wednesday-Saturday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. This site will be closed effective Oct. 13.

Zitro Recycling

Located behind the Salvation Army on Halekuai Street. Hours: Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. (reverse vending machines only).

Recycling Centers with Redemption Center Options:

Kahului

Maui Community College: on Wahine Pio Road. Drop-box hours: 7 a.m.-7 p.m., seven days a week. Redemption Center hours: Wednesday-Sunday, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m., closed 1-2 p.m.

Makawao

Behind Kalama School off Makani Road. Drop-box hours: 24 hours, seven days a week. Redemption Center hours: Wednesday-Sunday, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m., closed 1-2 p.m.

Haiku

Next to the Haiku Community Center. Drop-box hours: 24 hours, seven days a week. Redemption Center hours: Wednesday-Sunday, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m., closed 1-2 p.m.

Drop-box recycling centers without redemption center options:

Central Maui Landfill

On Pulehu Road. Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 6 a.m.-4 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Wailuku

At the corner of Maakala and Kahekili Highway during daylight hours only.

Residents can also call Maui Recycling Service at 244-0443 to arrange for curbside recycling pickups.
