The Avalanche-Journal said the corpsman's father is a former Lubbock County court-at-law judge and that his mother was executive director of the Lubbock Rape Crisis Center for 30 years.

Cannon's awards included the Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Expert Pistol Shot Ribbon.
