Sharks tag Honu with first loss

Jimmy James allowed one hit over five innings and Kris Medlen pitched a perfect ninth for the save as Honolulu defeated North Shore, 2-1, at Maui's Iron Maehara Stadium to hand the Honu their first Hawaii Winter Baseball loss.

Four Sharks pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.

Also last night, Waikiki scored three runs in the top of ninth — one on Josh Womack's bloop single, and two on a pair of errors — to defeat West Oahu, 8-6, at Hans L' Orange Park.


VOLLEYBALL

HPU WINS ON ROAD

Antje Buskies had 25 kills and 28 digs as Hawai'i Pacific beat Dixie State College, 30-32, 28-30, 30-23, 30-16, 15-10, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at St. George, Utah.

Kelly Balanay added 19 kills and Leslie Schipper had 12 kills and 17 digs for HPU (7-10, 2-4 PacWest).

Cami Johnson had 18 kills and 18 digs for Dixie (4-15, 2-3).

Elsewhere yesterday:

  • Dana Edington had 23 kills as Grand Canyon (4-11, 1-3) defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i (7-6, 3-2), 30-26, 28-30, 33-31, 30-26, in a PacWest match at Phoenix, Ariz. Noelle Filimoeatu had 16 kills, and Faylynn Merrick and Agnes Tuilevuka each had 15 for BYUH.

  • Hillary Hurley had 13 kills as Hawai'i-Hilo (11-5) beat Mills College (1-7), 30-18, 30-21, 30-17, in a non-conference match at Oakland, Calif. Hilo High grad Loke Davis had 10 kills for Mills.
