$1M Weinberg grant helps retail incubator

The Pacific Gateway Center, a nonprofit organization that helps immigrants, refugees and low-income residents achieve self sufficiency, is getting a $1 million grant from the Weinberg Foundation to help complete work on its retail incubator project.
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Paradise Enterprise Center is scheduled to be opened in a 10,000-square foot building at 83 N. King Street in Chinatown and is designed to support small crafters and cultural artisans. They will be provided a business center, technical assistance, small-business training and retail space. The group said the project will provide business resources for the low-income community while encouraging growth and stability for the enterprises.
The Pacific Gateway Center, founded in 1973, also operates its Culinary Business Incubator on Umi Street in Kalihi.
UHA, CANCER SOCIETY SPONSORING TV ADS
UHA, the state's third-largest commercial health insurer, said it was joining with the American Cancer Society in Hawai'i to run television advertising urging women to get a mammogram in supporting National Breast Cancer Awareness month. The incidence of breast cancer in the state has increased over the past two decades.
UHA said it also will work with its physician network to support doctors' efforts to have patients get mammograms and will contact members whose records indicate they haven't had the examination in the past two years.
"Too many women in Hawai'i and too many women covered by UHA aren't getting the mammograms they need," said Dr. Max Botticelli, UHA chief executive officer.
"Our records indicated that only 40 percent of our members who should have received a mammogram over the past two years are getting one."
MILK PRODUCTION PLUMMETS IN STATE
Hawai'i livestock industry production was mixed in August, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Milk production plunged 48 percent from August 2006 to 2.5 million pounds following the shutdown of one of O'ahu's two remaining dairies last summer. Cumulative milk production for the first eight months of 2007 totaled 26.8 million pounds, which was down 33 percent from the same period in 2006.
Egg production fell 17 percent from August 2006, to 6.8 million. Cumulative egg production through August fell 18 percent to 54.9 million eggs.
Total cattle marketed for August rose 12 percent from August 2006, to 3,800 head.
Cumulative cattle marketings for the first eight months of 2007 totaled 35,500 head, down 2 percent from the same period a year ago.
Pork production during August 2007 fell 11 percent from August 2006, to 298,000 pounds. Cumulative pork production for the first eight months of 2007 totaled 2.3 million pounds, which down 10 percent from a year ago.
HORIZON LINES GETS NEW CONTAINERS
Horizon Lines Inc. said it will take delivery of 1,200 new 45-foot shipping containers in this month as part of an ongoing equipment investment program. Since the beginning of 2007, Horizon has ordered 2,200 new dry containers and 600 new 40-foot high-cube boxes. The North Carolina-based company also has added more than 1,000 new high-cube refrigerated containers.
Horizon said it has added more than 235 flat-racks particularly to service Hawai'i, where such oversized cargo shipping equipment is especially useful for construction and heavy equipment shippers.
STARBUCKS OPENS 68TH HAWAI'I STORE
Starbucks Hawaii Coffee recently opened its 68th Hawai'i store at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Waikiki. On the corner of Don Ho Lane and Lewers Street, the 603-square-foot store offers a view of the newly improved Lewers Street promenade.
CASTLE GROUP HIRES PUBLIC RELATIONS HELP
The Castle Group Inc. said it retained CCG Investor Relations and Strategic Communications to help with announcements and other communications with investors as it looks to expand its hotel management business.
Castle Group is the holding company for Castle Resorts & Hotels. The Honolulu-based company manages hotels and condominiums in Hawai'i, Micronesia, Thailand and New Zealand.
