Teen burglars caught returning to scene, Maui police say
The Maui News
LAHAINA After breaking into a Lahaina surf shop and stealing more than $6,000 in clothing, three teenagers were arrested early Thursday when they returned to the scene of the crime, police said.
When police officers stopped a white PT Cruiser van matching the description given by a witness, one occupant was wearing a jacket taken in the break-in, said acting Lt. Ernest Soares of the Lahaina Criminal Investigation Division. A security tab was still attached to the jacket, Soares said.
The burglary was reported at 12:19 a.m. Thursday at the Local Motion store on Front Street near Lahaina Cannery Mall. The burglars smashed a window to climb into the store, Soares said. He said various pieces of clothing including surf shorts, shirts and jackets were stolen, with the suspects carrying out armfuls of clothing valued at $6,317.
The three then headed to Wailuku to drop off the clothing at the home of one suspect before driving back to Lahaina, Soares said. He said police officers were still at the scene investigating the burglary when they saw the white PT Cruiser heading toward them.
Along with a description of the vehicle, the witness had provided a partial license plate of the PT Cruiser, Soares said. It was stopped on Front Street.
The three suspects – two 18-year-old men and a 16-year-old Wailuku boy – admitted they had broken into the store, Soares said. The three took Soares and detective Jayson Rego back to the Wailuku house where they had stashed the stolen clothing.
"We were able to recover all of the stolen merchandise," Soares said.
Police charged Ronald Herbst, 18, of Wailuku, and Keale Alii Baclig, 18, of Pukalani, with second-degree burglary. Bail for the two was set at $1,000 each.
