National youth and worship leader Jesse Manibusan will headline the free concert, "Open My Eyes: Act of Compassion in Our Backyard," at 4 p.m. Oct. 28 in Mamiya Theatre at Chaminade University.

It's part of the Mackey Lecture series.

Manibusan, a singer, songwriter, guitarist and teller of humorous tales, often appears at Roman Catholic conferences and youth events. He holds a master's degree in multicultural ministries from the Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley, Calif.

He'll also present a workshop on "The Multi Cultural Church" at 9 a.m. Oct. 27 in the Mystical Rose Oratory: $15 ($20 at the door), includes refreshments and a light lunch.

8-WEEK SERIES AT WINDWARD CHURCH

Windward Religious Science Church offers an eight-week series of classes beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at King Intermediate School, Building A, in Kane'ohe.

Taught by the Rev. Patri Hildreth, its focus is "The Mind-Body Connection." The initial class is free. After that, it's $15 per class or $100 for the entire course.

CLASSES FOCUS ON SPIRITUAL WRITERS

The Rev. Jack Ryan, pastor of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic parish, is giving a free series of classes on "Great Spiritual Writers" beginning 7 p.m. Thursday.

The series runs one Thursday each month through May, and will begin with the recently published writings of Mother Theresa. Others topics include: The Desert Fathers, St. Benedict, Dante and St. Bernard of Clairvaux, the English mystics, Theresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Charles de Foucauld and Thomas Merton.

PET BLESSING SET AT UNITY CHURCH

Unity Church of Hawaii will hold its second annual pet blessing ceremony at 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Waikiki Elementary playground. It is free.

Cats and other small animals should be in carriers and dogs on leashes. There will be music by Sean Tiwanak and community blessing by the Revs. Sky St. John, Helen McLeod and Ginny Roll. Certificates will be available, and a photographer will be on hand.

DAYLONG CONGRESS INCLUDES MUSIC

"Fire Us Up, and Send Us Out" is the title for the O'ahu Young Adult Congress 2007's free concert, which will feature music by local artists 7 Simple Pieces and Busekrus.

The concert will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at St. Stephen's Diocesan Center, 6301 Pali Highway.

The daylong congress, which will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 20, brings together young adults, age 18-35, for sessions with local speakers. Events are being sponsored by the Diocesan Youth and Young Adult Board of the Roman Catholic Church in Hawai'i.

LEARN OVER LUNCH AT PALI TEMPLE

A "Lunch & Learning" event, sponsored by Hawaii Jewish Seniors, will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Temple Emanu-El, 2550 Pali Highway.

The featured speaker will be Dr. Kalani Brady, talking about "Kalaupapa: 60 Miles East and 60 Years Back."

LUTHERAN PASTOR AT BREAKFAST MEETING

The Rev. Jeff Lilley will discuss "My Faith Journey as a Lutheran Pastor" at the Interfaith Open Table breakfast meeting, 7 a.m. Wednesday at Temple Emanu-El.

Lilley is the new pastor of the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, after serving congregations in the Central States Synod ELCA for more than 17 years.

Also on the agenda is David Foreman discussing community activism and an unnamed young ministerial student who will discuss "Brutality in Burma." (Because he has a large family in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, he asked to remain anonymous.)
