Think pink in October — but think smart

StoryChat: Comment on this story

Americans are urged to think — and buy— pink in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month.

As a nation we will walk and run to raise money for research, wear pink ribbons and will be bombarded with choices of goods colored and designed to tug at our heartstrings when we think of those we love who have faced breast cancer.

You can't quarrel with the cause, but it is better to think smart as well as pink.

Uniting in the effort to fight this disease, to find a cure and to raise money for research is a worthy goal. But there are better ways to go about that than just reaching for the product with the pink ribbon on it.

Buy the bauble that tells the world you care about breast cancer patients if it makes you feel better.

But to really think pink:

  • Earmark a donation for a reputable charity that day in and day out is aggressively working to find a cure.

  • Support efforts that are aimed primarily at raising money to fund research or help breast cancer patients and are not just marketing ploys.

  • Urge women over 40 to get yearly mammograms, and urge all women to make healthy eating habits and exercise a part of their lives.

That will truly tell the world you care.
