Mililani picks up 14-7 win

MILILANI — After a one-year absence from atop the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red West Division, Mililani clinched at least a share of the title with its 14-7 win over Campbell last night at John Kauinana Stadium.

Rustin Funakoshi threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Trojans (6-1, 4-1 Red West) past the Sabers (2-4-1, 2-3) in a mud bog.

Mililani, ranked fourth in The Advertiser's Top 10 Poll, extended its win streak to five games.

Trojans head coach Darnell Arceneaux was reluctant to celebrate.

"We're only worried about Radford (Mililani's next game), we're going to approach this like it's our championship game," Arceneaux said.

If Mililani beats the Rams, it will win the division outright for the first time since 2005.

The Trojans' defense allowed just a 92-yard touchdown run by Samson Anguay — despite giving up 259 yards. All but 26 of which were gained on the ground.

Mililani capitalized on a Campbell fumble for the game's first score.

Funakoshi connected with Taz Stevenson on a 26-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing play and the sophomore broke a pair of tackles on his way to the end zone.

Colin Lund's extra point made it 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Trojans' defense made an impressive stand near the end of the first half.

Campbell — aided by a pair of 15-yard personal foul penalties — moved the ball inside the Trojans' 1.

However, the snap was fumbled — and recovered — on first down for no gain. Pita Feleunga was stuffed on a dive on second down and Campbell was flagged for a false start. Bronson Ellis-Riveria went for no gain on third-and-goal from the 6 and Kevin Newcomb's pass on fourth down fell incomplete.

"Our defense came up with some big fourth-down stops," Funakoshi said. "They were keeping us in the game."

With under six minutes left in the third quarter, Funakoshi found a wide-open Lund near the left sideline and he dashed 79 yards for a touchdown.

Campbell's Anguay scored on the first play of the fourth quarter, taking an inside handoff and darting 92 yards untouched to cut the Sabers' deficit to 14-7.
