Palau hoping to benefit from military buildup on Guam

Associated Press

HAGATNA, Guam — Central Pacific island nations are hoping the U.S. military buildup on Guam will benefit them economically.

The Palau government is interested in offering some of its uninhabited islands for military training.

Palau also wants to welcome more vacationing U.S. military personnel and their families.

Palau Chamber of Commerce executive secretary Temetuchl Baules says his country loves military visitors.

He says U.S. troops and their families make a point of buying local goods and services, such as boat charters and car rentals.

The U.S. military plans to move 8,000 Marines and their dependents to Guam from the southern Japanese island of Okinawa over the next decade.
