Bishop Museum's Yosihiko Sinto to lecture Oct. 18

Advertiser Staff

As part of Bishop Museum's Traditions of the Pacific educational series, acclaimed archeologist Yosihiko Sinoto will talk about "Huahine: Island of the Lost Canoe" 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 18.

In the 1960s, while flying over the remote French Polynesian island of Huahine, Sinoto spotted the vague shadow of a straight line on a hill near the sacred mountain Moua Tapu. Exploring the area, he discovered parts of an ocean-going canoe big enough to have sailed to Hawai'i and back. Sinoto will discuss this landmark find and other major finds of his extensive archeological work on Huahine. Sinoto, with Rick Carroll, also wrote a book called "Huahine: Island of the Lost Canoe" (Bishop Museum Press, $12.95).

The museum will give a Hokule'a poster to the first 50 attendees.
