Police arrest 3 suspects in Kapiolani robbery

Advertiser Staff

An off-duty police officer working special duty on Kapi'olani Boulevard chased down and apprehended a robbery suspect tonight at Pensacola and Kamaile streets across from McKinley High School.

Patrol officers responding to the robbery call arrested two other suspects on the 500 block of Pi'ikoi Street minutes later.

Police Lt. Norman Kau said a man and woman walking on Kapi'olani Boulevard at about 9:30 p.m. were confronted by the two or three suspects and after a brief struggle, the robbers fled with the woman victim's handbag.

The officer working special duty nearby chased one of the male suspects down and held him for police, Kau said.

The case is being investigated as a first-degree robbery because force was used and a weapon was allegedly mentioned during the robbery, Kau said.

A man and woman were being held as suspects for questioning at 10 p.m. fronting a building at 510 Pi'ikoi St.

The victims did not appear to be seriously injured, police said.
