Former DOE teacher sentenced to 37 months in prison

Advertiser Staff

A federal judge today sentenced a former public elementary school teacher to 37 months in prison for multiple drug offenses.

U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway's sentencing for Bronwyn Kugle, 39, also included criminal forfeiture of her interest in a Kailua residence.

Kugle was convicted for conspiring to distribute one kilogram of cocaine, over 1,089 tablets of methylenedioxymethamphetamine known as "ecstasy," and possession of a loaded firearm.

In a raid on her Kailua home last Feb. 13, federal agents and police also seized user amounts of crystal methamphetamine.

Ed Kubo, U.S. Attorney for the Hawai'i District, described Kugle as a user of cocaine and methamphetamine who had turned to selling drugs in order to support her habit. She had provided financing for drug deals by utilizing the equity of her residence, said Kubo.

Kugle was arrested after she accepted a parcel shipped from California containing drugs that had been previously intercepted by federal agents.

At the time of her arrest, Kugle was employed by the Department of Education as a teacher at Ka'elepulu Elementary School.
