Soccer: Solo, Scurry, Kai to play in series with Mexico

Advertiser Staff

ST. LOUIS — Hope Solo, whose remarks critical of coach Greg Ryan got her dismissed from the U.S. team at the Women's World Cup, is on the roster for a three-game series with Mexico.

So are fellow goalie Briana Scurry and former University of Hawaii and Kahuku High star Natasha Kai.

The teams play Saturday at the Edward Jones Dome.

Ryan benched Solo for the semifinal game with Brazil in last month's World Cup, even though Solo had been the No. 1 keeper and hadn't allowed a goal in three straight games. Scurry was beaten four times in a 4-0 loss, then played in the third-place game, a 4-1 victory over Norway.

Solo's comments also were critical of Scurry, the veteran keeper who has helped the Americans to two Olympic gold medals and one world title.

A third keeper, Nicole Barnhart, also was chosen for the 20-player team for the series, which continues in Portland, Ore., on Oct. 17 and in Albuquerque, N.M., on Oct. 20.

Only two players from the Women's World Cup roster in China won't play in the entire series. Defender Stephanie Lopez will not be available in the first and third matches while she plays for her college team, the University of Portland. She will be available for the match in Portland.

Midfielder Marci Jobson will not be available for any of the three matches; she has returned to her post as women's soccer coach at Northern Illinois.

U.S. stars Kristine Lilly and Abby Wambach will be on hand.

The roster:

Goalkeepers: Nicole Barnhart; Briana Scurry; Hope Solo.

Defenders: Marian Dalmy; Tina Ellertson; Stephanie Lopez; Kate Markgraf; Christie Rampone; Cat Whitehill.

Midfielders: Shannon Boxx; Lori Chalupny; Angela Hucles; Carli Lloyd; Leslie Osborne; Aly Wagner.

Forwards: Natasha Kai; Kristine Lilly; Heather O'Reilly; Lindsay Tarpley; Abby Wambach.
