NFL bottom 10: These Jets not ready for takeoff

By Steve Harvey
Los Angeles Times

The Giants-Jets game was filled with suspense amid reports that George Steinbrenner would fire the losing coach.

The Jets were beaten, 24-35, but no one was sacked. Like the Giants, they are a New Jersey team so Steinbrenner has no jurisdiction over them. The Jets did, however, climb to No. 2 in the Bottom Ten, just behind Miami.

The Dolphins succumbed to Houston, 19-22, meaning the franchise can still achieve its dream of being the first in the NFL to record undefeated and winless seasons. Eleven setbacks to go for the latter honor — a tough challenge but the Dolphins have a lemon at quarterback. Someone named Cleo Lemon has replaced injured Trent Green.

Speaking of winless teams, offensive guard Richie Incognito of the St. Louis Lambs was penalized four times for 50 yards against Arizona. No wonder he won't tell anyone his real name.

On a positive note, how about those Buffalo Bills? Sure, they're 1-4 but they are tied for second place in the AFC East.

Wreck/Record/Last Loss/Next Loss:

1./Miami-x/0-5/19-22/Houston/Cleveland

2./N.J. Jets/1-4/24-35/N.J. Giants/Philadelphia

3./New Orleans/0-4/13-16/Carolina/Seattle

4./St. Louis/0-5/31-34/Arizona/Baltimore

5./Denver/2-3/3-41/San Diego/In seclusion

6. Minnehaha 1-3; 7. Unavailable at press time; 8. Cincinnati (1-3); 9. Kansas City (2-3); 10. L.A. Angels (0-3).

x-Not to be confused with Miami (Ohio).

Illegal use of the feet? When NBC showed a shot of sauerkraut workers standing in a giant vat of cabbage at Lambeau Field, even broadcaster John Madden (temporarily) lost his appetite. Said Madden: "Kind of wonder where those boots have been."

Get serious: ESPN broadcaster Mike Tirico, speaking of the Buffalo Bills of the Thurman Thomas era, said: "We remember them almost more for the four AFC titles than for the four Super Bowl losses." (Leave the jokes to the Bottom Ten, Mike).
