Toddler struck by van in Waipahu parking lot dies

Advertiser Staff

An 1 1/2-year-old girl struck by a van today in the parking lot of Times Super Market in Waipahu died at Hawai'i Medical Center West.

City Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said ambulance personnel were dispatched at 4:55 p.m. to 94-766 Farrington Highway and attended to the victim before taking the child to the hospital.

The girl apparently darted away from a grandparent and into the path of a van leaving the parking lot.

The 1986 Chevy van was driven by a 62-year-old man, who was not injured, police said.

The death is O'ahu's fifth non-traffic fatality of the year as compared to two on the same date last year, police said.
