Toddler struck by van in Waipahu parking lot dies

An 1 1/2-year-old girl struck by a van today in the parking lot of Times Super Market in Waipahu died at Hawai'i Medical Center West.City Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said ambulance personnel were dispatched at 4:55 p.m. to 94-766 Farrington Highway and attended to the victim before taking the child to the hospital.
The girl apparently darted away from a grandparent and into the path of a van leaving the parking lot.
The 1986 Chevy van was driven by a 62-year-old man, who was not injured, police said.
The death is O'ahu's fifth non-traffic fatality of the year as compared to two on the same date last year, police said.
