Aggressive panhandling in Waikiki addressed

Advertiser Staff

The Waikiki Neighborhood Board voted last night to prohibit aggressive solicitation and panhandling within 50 feet of an outside ATM or check-cashing business in Waikiki.

The proposal passed 10-6. Also passed with unanimous support was a New York State anti-loitering law, but two other motions focused on addressing homeless issues were shelved.

The issues to be dealt with at a later time are vagrancy at bus stops, the beach and sleeping on the sidewalk, Waikiki Neighborhood Board Secretary Mike Peters said via e-mail.

"These motions are intended to send a message to the city and state," said Peters, who introduced the motions.
