Police opened a murder-suicide investigation yesterday after a man allegedly stabbed a Kalihi bar hostess with whom he had become acquainted, then was killed after his pickup truck crashed into a wall in Salt Lake.

The 41-year-old woman was stabbed about 2 a.m. yesterday outside the 1506 Kaumualii Park apartments on Kaumuali'i Street in Kalihi. Forty minutes later, witnesses reported seeing a truck deliberately driven into a concrete wall, killing the man.

Police said the man had gone to the woman's home to visit her and her sister after seeing the hostess at the Black Stallion lounge Monday night.

The man, a 42-year-old Salt Lake resident, allegedly stabbed the woman at least six times while they were in the street before he drove off in a white 2004 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, police said.

Police said the man was a regular at the Black Stallion lounge in Kalihi, where the woman worked.

Their names were not disclosed by the medical examiner's office.

Homicide detectives described the two as "acquaintances" and were trying to find out the nature of their relationship.

Bar owner Sandy Song, who bought the Black Stallion 19 months ago, said she had seen the man in her bar about a half-dozen times prior to last night.

She said he spoke to the woman, who started working at the bar two months ago, each time he came in but that they never had a confrontation. The man was in the bar Monday and left at 11:30 p.m., Song said.

"I dropped her off (at home) at 11:40 p.m. I don't know what happen after that," Song said. "I have enough grief right now. We are all in grief right now."

Authorities received a report of a stabbing at the apartment building at 2:08 a.m. The woman was taken in critical condition to The Queen's Medical Center and died there, officials said.

Police said the suspect reportedly called his sister after driving away from the scene of the stabbing and told her he had just killed someone.

The man's sister reported the incident to police, who issued an all-points bulletin to patrol officers.

About 2:40 a.m., police received multiple calls from people who said they saw and heard a white pickup truck crash into a wall at the intersection of Ala Lilikoi Street and Salt Lake Boulevard. The crash site is about three miles from where the stabbing occurred.

Police said witnesses told them the driver backed up at the intersection, sped up and drove into the wall.

The man was found dead in the truck when emergency responders arrived at the scene, officials said. Officers found a bloody knife in the truck, police said.
