ARCHERY

SHIPMAN ADVANCES

Hale'iwa's Phyllis Shipman, a 64-year-old retired principal, placed 14th recently at the First Nomination Shoot in Conyers, Ga. The finish determined her ranking for the Second Nomination Shoot in April.

The 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for archery consists of three shoots. The U.S. currently has three Olympic slots open for the men and one for the women.

Jennifer Nichols, of Cheyenne, Wyo., took first in the women's division with 23.75 points. Shipman collected 7.50 points. She advanced from the first day into the final 16, which qualifies her for the next trial.

Nichols was the top qualifier, then won 14 of her 15 round-robin matches to accumulate her points. Brady Ellison, Glendale, Ariz., won the men's division with 20.75 points.

The Second Nomination Shoot will be at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., April 1 to 6. After the conclusion of that, the field will be cut to eight men and eight women. Those athletes compete in the Third Nomination Shoot at the Easton Archery Complex in Phoenix, Ariz., May 1 to 4, to determine their final rank. Those athletes will be nominated to the USOC for a position on the U.S. Olympic Team.
