Hawaii Kai man wins Maui Writers Conference award

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i Kai writer and Northwest Airlines pilot Andy Scontras won the Rupert Hughes Writing Contest at the Maui Writers Conference last month. Scontras is polishing his manuscript, "The Gene Weaver," a thriller about a scientist searching for a genetic fountain of youth.

The award is given by the family of the late Rupert Hughes, distinguished playwright, author and screenwriter.

It was Scontras' third visit to the conference and the second time he entered the competition. After the award, several agents expressed interest in representing the aspiring author.

Scontras' manuscript was selected from about 100 entries.
