Man free on bail charged with Kailua robbery, kidnapping

A 32-year-old man was charged tonight with armed robbery, first-degree burglary and kidnapping stemming from an Oct. 3 incident in Kailua allegedly committed while he was free on $100,000 bail for similar offenses.

Opherro G. Jones, 32, who has 12 aliases including Garry Lopaka Puuala, is accused of breaking into a Kihapai home with another unknown suspect to collect a $600 debt from a man, 32. Jones allegedly threatened the man with a gun.

Jones was arrested today at 4:05 p.m. at Kekio and Ohelokai roads in Ka'a'awa. He is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail pending an initial appearance tomorrow at District Court.

The Kailua case is the second incident in less than six months involving Jones, a felon with 18 prior convictions, allegedly using a firearm in commisson of a crime.

Police suspect he is involved with a group allegedly "ripping off" drug dealers.

On Aug. 5, Jones was charged in connection with the June 15 robbery and kidnapping of a man on Round Top Drive. While allegedly pistol-whipping the victim, Jones was wounded in the andomen when the revolver went off.

Police had arrested him Aug. 3 at Waikele Shopping Center for allegedly dealing marijuana out of a parked car. Police recovered a bag with two firearms, including a Uzi-type machine pistol, in a warrant search of the car.

Jones' prior convictions include four repeat offenses for first-degree robbery and kidnapping.
