Hops & Grinds is all about Oktoberfest tonight.

A post-sunset benefit for a good cause, a third birthday party for a Hotel Street trailblazer, a trusty Oktoberfest celebration and a handful of live gigs are piquing The Night Stuff's interest this week.

TAKING CARE OF WOMEN

Tempo Valley and The Girlas generously lend a live hand tonight to Malama Wahine, a benefit aimed at preventing breast cancer in high-risk women. The nine-hour music fest at thirtyninehotel opens at 5 p.m. with the cool acoustics of The Girlas and Jaena. Tempo Valley's soothing urban blend of live hip-hop and jazz starts at 10 p.m. with DJ Azia taking things into the early a.m. hours.

Cover is $25 for the whole evening. thirtyninehotel will offer light pupu, with a fresh juice bar open until 10 p.m. There'll be sweet giveaways all night from an army of donating sponsors. Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is the lead sponsor. Check out www.myspace.com/jenkohawaii for more details.

THIRTYNINE'S THIRD

After lending itself to charity tonight, thirtyninehotel throws a bash of its own on Saturday to celebrate a third birthday: its own. And the pioneering gallery and multimedia performance space — Gelareh Khoie and Co. initially parked the covered wagons loaded with underground disco LPs on a Hotel Street without neighboring NextDoor or Bar 35 — is sticking to what it digs best.

New York-based turntablist Nicky Siano returns to spin his third thirtyninehotel b'day celebration. thirtyninehotel partner DJ Harvey wings in from London for a set. And resident man of the crates Mark Chittom pulls out the vinyl copy of Talking Heads 77 especially for the brand new Klipshorns. (Wishful thinking on my part.)

Advance tix are $10 at www.thirtyninehotel.com; $15 at the door. A $20 VIP ticket gets you into a 9 p.m. pre-party with free apps and champagne. The rest of the world gets in at 10 p.m.

PROST!

Local beer sage Andy Baker is following up on the best German brews and German-style brews when Oktoberfest is still just a glimmer in a sauerbraten-n-suds lover's eye. So trust this year's October Brauhaus outing of his monthly Hops & Grinds to again bring on a sizable variety of Baker-selected beers for sampling and an all-you-can-nosh buffet of German grinds from host The Willows and chef Jay Matsukawa.

It happens from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. today. Advance tix are $25 at The Willows, The Liquor Collection, The Wine Stop and Tamura's in Kaimuki; $30 at the door. The Willows is at 901 Hausten St. More information at 271-9701.

TURNTABLISM'S SWELL, BUT ...

If you're a regular Night Stuff reader, you know how much I loves me some good live music. A roundup of what I'd consider checking out this week includes:

  • Singer/songwriter/musician/now Los Angeles-dwelling Makana, back in town for a Wednesday performance at Indigo Eurasian Cuisine. 8 to 11 p.m.

  • Not-really-from-Japan-but-could've-fooled-us rockabilly J-pop/rockers Bari Bari 13 at the Lava Rock Lounge's Live Thursdays. Ask them to play "Tuppari High School Rock 'n' Roll" and prepare to dance. 10 p.m.

  • Amateur local bands competing for a shot at $28,000 in cash and prizes at the seventh annual Mai Tai Bar Rumble. The bands are trying to outwit, outplay and outlast each other each Tuesday night until finals on Dec. 4. Beach 5 closes this week's post-competition After Shock party.

  • Trumpeter DeShannon Higa's neo-bop quartet Quadpod featuring guitarist Robert Shinoda, drummer Darryl Pelegrini and upright bassist Dean Taba at The Dragon Upstairs on Monday. Enjoy with a gin martini and a window seat overlooking Nu'uanu Avenue. 8:30 p.m.
