Searchers yesterday morning recovered the body of a 27-year-old man last seen by two hiking companions on Saturday afternoon above Makahiku Falls in Haleakala National Park.

Edward Pedrick Jr. apparently slipped or jumped into a rain-swollen stream during a hike in 'Ohe'o Gulch, officials said.

Two swollen streams and continuing rain on Maui had prevented divers from searching for the missing hiker earlier this week.

At 8 a.m. yesterday river levels in the Palikea tributary above Makahiku Falls receded enough to allow ground crews to resume the search for the body. A unified command search involving National Park rangers, Maui County Fire Department, Rescue 10, Hana Fire Department, Hana Police Department and a Maui County Dive Team found Pedrick's body in the same pool area where he disappeared.

Two fellow hikers reported Pedrick missing about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Pedrick, originally from New Jersey, had moved to Maui about a year ago.
