Tennis: Venus Williams upset by Pennetta in Bangkok

Associated Press

BANGKOK, Thailand — Venus Williams fell to Italy's Flavia Pennetta in the semifinals of the Bangkok Open today, losing three set points in the Italian's 6-4, 7-6 (8) victory.

Pennetta's aggressive play and strong serves left the No. 2 seeded American stunned on several points. The seventh-seeded Italian had lost 6-2, 6-2 to Williams in a Korea Open semifinal two weeks ago.

"I just want to enjoy this moment," Pennetta said. "This is one of my most beautiful wins."

In the final, Pennetta will face Taiwan's Chan Yung-jan, a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 winner over China's Yan Zi in the other semifinal.
