Arab-American comedian Nazareth will perform in a free comedy concert at 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at Calvary Chapel, 98-1016 Komo Mai Drive.

Nazareth, who was born in Israel and lived in Kuwait before coming to America, has played at The Comedy Store and The Improv, as well as TV's Comedy Central.

HPU TO SCREEN BHUTAN FILM

Hawai'i Pacific University will screen "Bhutan — Taking The Middle Path To Happiness" at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at Tenney Theater, St. Andrews Cathedral.

The documentary, directed by Tom Vendetti of Maui, focuses on the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan and its effort to raise the "Gross National Happiness" of its people; it will be accompanied by a lecture and performance of The Music of Bhutan by Jigme Drukpa.

EX-BALLPLAYER IN TALK AT CHURCH

"This Ain't Brain Surgery: A Conversation about Baseball and Life" with baseball great Larry Dierker will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 4364 Hardy St. in Lihu'e, Kaua'i.

A reception will follow with Dierker, a National League Manager of the Year in 1998 and all -star pitcher who now is a sports commentator. He wrote "This Ain't Brain Surgery: How to Win the Pennant Without Losing Your Mind" and "My Team: Choosing My Dream Team from My Forty Years In Baseball."

CONFERENCE ON GENERATION GAP

The Shin Buddhist Project and Pacific Buddhist Academy will sponsor a daylong conference, "Gathering 2007 — Interpersonal Relationships: Closing the Generational Gap," at 8 a.m. Oct. 20 at the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin.

The day of educational sessions will be focused on enhancing interpersonal relationships between generations through lectures, storytelling and facilitated small group activities.

Cost is $50 ($25 students), and includes lunch and refreshments.

DRAMATIC READING OF LUKE'S GOSPEL

Michael Reardon will give a dramatic reading of "The Gospel of Luke," proclaimed in the oral tradition of the early church, designed with music, lighting and costumes at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 91-1004 North Road, 'Ewa Beach.

Reardon, who has memorized the four gospels as well as the Book of Revelation, performs them dramatically worldwide.

The event is free; a reception will follow the two-hour performance.

FREE SCREENINGS OF DOCUMENTARY

Two free screening of "Ghosts of Abud Chraib," a documentary by Rory Kennedy, will be at:

  • 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Buddhist Study Center.

  • 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at First Unitarian Church.

    The documentary is being shown nationwide in more than 500 temples and churches, sponsored by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, made up of more than 130 religious organizations. The events are co-sponsored locally by The Interfaith Alliance Hawaii, The Buddhist Study Center and First Unitarian Church.
