Wie shoots 71, avoids last place in Samsung World golf

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu's Michelle Wie shot a 1-under-par 71, her only round under par this week, to finish at 18-over par today in the final round of the LPGA's Samsung World Championship at Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert, Calif.

Wie, 18, entered the fourth round in last place in the 20-player field, but finished ahead of Bettina Hauert, who shot a 76 today to finish a shot behind Wie at 307.

Wie earned $13,125, which is more than the $9,899 she had won this year prior to this tournament.

Lorena Ochoa shot a 66 to finish with a four-stroke vcitory at 270.

Wie played her best round of the tournament today, but still showed signs of inconsistency. She made birdies on the par-4 No. 2, par-5 No. 3 and par-5 No. 7 to go to 3 under today, but bogeyed the par-3 No. 8 and par-4 No. 9.

Wie got back to 3 under with birdies at the par-4 No. 10 and par-5 No. 12, but double-bogeyed the par-3 No. 13. Wie birdied the par-5 No. 15 to go to 2 under, but bogeyed the par-4 18th.

The 72-hole tournament features a limited field of the LPGA's top money leaders, along with Wie (special exemption). There was no cut after the second round.
