Tennis: Injured Sharapova withdraws from Zurich Open

Associated Press

LINZ, Austria — Defending champion Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the Zurich Open, which starts Monday, because of a lingering shoulder injury.

The fourth-ranked Russian announced the withdrawal on her Web site Sunday.

Sharapova will also miss the Generali Ladies in Linz, Austria, starting Oct. 22, which she also won last year.

On Wednesday, Sharapova lost to teenager Victoria Azarenka 7-6 (9), 6-2 in the second round of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

It was her first match in six weeks since her defeat in the third round of the U.S. Open.
