Tennis: Italy's Pennetta captures Bangkok Open

Associated Press

BANGKOK, Thailand — Italy's Flavia Pennetta won the Bangkok Open on Sunday, defeating Taiwan's Chan Yung-jan 6-1, 6-3 in a final interrupted for four hours because of rain.

Pennetta, seeded seventh, captured her fourth career title. The 18-year-old Chan was playing in her first WTA final.

"She played well, didn't make mistakes and deserved to win," Chan said.

The rain delay stretched the total time of the match to more than five hours.

"It was tough conditions," Pennetta said, adding she will "leave here with the good memory of beating great players."

She advanced to the final by beating Venus Williams in a semifinal.
