POLICE BEAT
Crews seek swimmer, 16, missing off Ka'a'awa

Advertiser Staff

Rescuers have been searching for a 16-year-old swimmer who went missing yesterday on the Windward side.

Honolulu Fire Department rescue crews last night suspended a search for the boy, who was swimming off Ka'a'awa, but they expected to resume the search this morning.

The Coast Guard was still searching the area last night with a helicopter and the cutter Ahi, a spokeswoman said at 7:30 p.m.

Fire Capt. Robert Main said the missing 16-year-old boy and two friends were swimming off Kamehameha Highway and Puakenikeni Road at about 3:30 p.m. when the boy got in trouble and didn't make it to shore. He was reported missing at about 4:10 p.m.

His friends made it safely to shore. The HFD search will resume at first light today, Main said.
