HFD commendation ceremony today

Advertiser Staff

Medals of Valor and Certificates of Commendation will be presented to civilians and fire fighters at 9 a.m. today at the Honolulu Fire Department's Charles H. Thurston Training Center.

Fire fighters and civilians receiving these HFD awards saved several lives in three separate structure fires, one auto fire, and two water rescues.

In addition, medical help at auto accidents and for persons with airway obstructions resulted in several other lives saved. A summary of the events and the HFD awards is attached for your convenience.

The Civilian Medal of Valor is given to those who distinguish themselves by means of outstanding bravery and at the risk of their own lives. It is the highest honor the HFD can bestow upon a member of the public.

The Fire Fighter Medal of Valor is awarded to fire fighters who demonstrate outstanding bravery and distinguish themselves conspicuously, above and beyond the normal performance of duty.

A Certificate of Commendation recognizes civilians or fire fighters who have performed exceptional acts of service or bravery at lesser levels of personal risk.

The Training Center is located at 890 Valkenburgh Street.
