Hawaii will administer flu vaccine to 66,000 children

About 66,000 elementary and middle school students and 8,900 teachers and staff in Hawai'i will receive flu vaccine from this week until January 2008 through the state Health Department's "Protect Hawai'i's Keiki: Stop Flu at School" program.

The department projects 88,200 doses of vaccine will be administered since many children under age nine require two doses. About 340 schools and 500 clinics are participating.

"Preventing the spread of flu among children at school can reduce the spread of flu at home and in the community," said Health Director Dr. Chiyome Leinaala Fukino.

Of the children to be vaccinated, 55,500 attend public schools.
