Kai Sensors inks Army contract for new technology

Kai Sensors Inc., a Honolulu-based developer of wireless heart and respiration sensing technology, said it has secured a U.S. Army contract for the development of sensor and communication technology that could be worth up to $850,000.Kai Sensors is developing products based on its heart sensing radar technology named LifeReader. The technology, developed at the University of Hawai'i's Electrical Engineering Department, can detect heart beat and breathing of multiple people wirelessly with no contact with the subjects. The company said its technology is capable to doing so through walls and has enough accuracy to be used in health care applications.
"We are very excited about partnering with the Army in our chip development efforts," states Andrea Yuen, Kai Sensors' chief executive officer, in a press statement.
"Being awarded this contract by the Army validates that we are at the cutting edge of our field and will facilitate our efforts to develop LifeReader™ chips that will someday be integrated into products for the automotive, homeland security, and medical markets."
Kai Sensors said the recent agreement with the Army covers the first phase of the contract.
