UH hoop player from China out for season with injury

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i basketball player Ji Xiang, the program's first recruit from China, will sit out the 2007-08 season after injuring his right knee.

The 6-10 forward suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during Friday night's Twilight Ohana intrasquad scrimmage.

"Obviously it's devastating news," head coach Bob Nash said. "We're disappointed for Ji, but we'll have to forge ahead. I'm confident he'll make a full recovery and be ready to go next season."

Ji, a true freshman, will redshirt this season and has four years of eligibility remaining.

A native of Zhangzhou, Henan, China, Ji is one of three Chinese-born players in NCAA Division I basketball this year.

He attended the United States Basketball Academy in Blue River, Ore., for the past two years. He was one of more than 20

Chinese players who attended the year-round training facility founded by former UH head coach Bruce O'Neil.
