Young Brothers gets state OK for 7.5% fuel surcharge

Associated Press

HONOLULU — The Public Utilities Commission is allowing a major interisland shipper to add a fuel surcharge to its rates for the first time.

In addition, the commission has granted Young Bros. Ltd. a 7.5 percent increase. The fuel surcharge will be adjusted every three months according to the price of gasoline.

The increase is expected to give the shipper $4.4 million in added annual revenue.

It's the third rate increase for the big interisland shipper in three years.

The company had filed for a 10.7 percent increase last December. The state's Division of Consumer Advocacy opposed that level.

New rates will go into effect when the shipper files revised tariff sheets.
