The Hawai'i Convention Center officials are doing prep work for a convention expected to attract more than 6,000 people in 2009.

Lee Conching, associate director of sales service and support at the Hawai'i Convention Center, will attend the 57th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics in San Diego, Calif. from Oct. 21-28. He will be there to observe and prepare for the ASHG's annual meeting that will be held at the Hawai'i Convention Center in 2009.

"It is important to plan well in advance of our guests' arrival to better prepare and accommodate their needs," Conching said.

The ASHG meeting in Hawai'i is expected to generate over 48,000 room nights for the Center's hotel partners. Total state-wide spending by attendees is expected to be over $28.3 million with approximately $2.7 million in state-wide tax revenue.

The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), founded in 1948, is the primary professional membership organization for human geneticists in the Americas. The nearly 8,000 members include researchers, academicians, clinicians, laboratory practice professionals, genetic counselors, nurses and others involved in or with special interest in human genetics.
