Olympian Tommie Smith to speak at 'Iolani Nov. 5

Olympic record holder Tommie Smith, who made a historic statement when he raised a black-gloved fist at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, will speak in 'Iolani School's St. Alban's Chapel from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 5. The talk is free and open to the public.Smith is the only man in the history of track and field to hold 11 world records simultaneously. During his career, he set seven individual world records and was a member of several world record relay teams while a student athlete at San Jose State.
At the 1968 19th Olympic Games, Smith broke the world and Olympic records with a time of 19.83 seconds in the 200 meters. Smith has had a distinguished career as a coach, educator, athletic director and civil rights activist. He was featured in the 1999 HBO documentary "Fists of Freedom" and recently released his autobiography "Silent Gesture."
