Youth project gets $125,000 boost

Advertiser Staff

Governor Linda Lingle's office announced yesterday the release of a $125,000 grant-in-aid for facility improvements at the Kualoa-He'eia Ecumenical Youth Project, a nonprofit agency that provides cultural, educational and social services for the benefit of communities from Kane'ohe to He'eia.

The funds will be used to renovate the building's existing kitchen so that it can be certified as a commercial food preparation facility and to reconfigure second floor classroom space to become a computer learning center.

The new kitchen will make possible an internship program for culinary arts students in collaboration with Windward Community College and also allow the KEY Project to provide improved food preparation and educational services for community members, the news release said. The computer learning center will support the KEY Project's computer literacy and job training programs for youth and adults alike.

Construction is scheduled to be completed in June 2008.
